This full day workshop on "The Use of Self" will concentrate on the following:
The Common Factors approach, The integrative approach, The self of the therapist at the center,
Person-of-the-Therapist model, Social Justice approach,
Person-of-the-Therapist approach: The Dialectics of Sameness & Difference.
Participants will be engaged in discussions that will prove to be beneficial in MH service delivery.

Workshop Titles
A Muslim Americans and Mental Health Service
(Presenter: Aisha Muhammad, MSW)
This workshop will educate partipants on the attitudes and beliefs of the Muslim American in an effort to
provide culturally competent Mental Health Services. Participants will develop a working vocabulary and
knowledge related to the concepts of the religion of Islam "as a way of life". The design of this workshop is to
aid participants on how to familiarize and apply culturally appropriate practices to Muslim American families
that need Mental Health assistance.
B Case Studies in Working with Latino Clients and Families
(Presenters: Milton Fuentes, Psy.D & Hector Adames, Psy. D)
The rapid growth of the Hispanic/Latino population in the U.S. is one of the most dramatic demographic
changes of the last century. This workshop will introduce appropriate therapeutic considerations when
dealing with Hispanic/Latino clients regarding assessments and evaluations. This workshop will further
discuss treatment delivery and the psycho therapeutic consideration for providing services to Hispanic/Latino
population.
C Working with African American Clients
(Presenter: Joseph Kumi, MSW, ACSW)
Joseph Kumi will present psychosocial elements involved with working with African American clients and
families. The workshop will present and expound on mental health issues relative to the African American
client and present treatment modalities and family intervention frameworks that counselors and therapists
should consider when working with this population.
D Cultural and Linguistic Competence: The Essential Elements of a
Transformed Mental Health System- AVAILABLE FOR THE AM SESSION ONLY
(Presenter: Lorna Hines-Cunningham, LCSW, PR/LSCW, ACSW)
This workshop provides training on the fundamental concepts and goals of a "transformed" mental health
system including the concepts of wellness and recovery. Participants will have the opportunity to revies
New Jersey's Transformation Action Plan, gain an understanding on key concepts of cultural and linguistic
competence, obtain knowledge and information regarding the relationship of the goals of a transformed
system as well as cultural and linguistic competency.
E Working SAMSHA- AVAILABLE FOR THE PM SESSION ONLY
(Presenter: Marion Mc Laurin-Director of MHCCC)
This workshop will concentrate on interpreting the standards with the goal of incorportating them into the
agency's operations and infrastructure. This session is ideal for cultural competence committee members,
administators and/or managers in that it will give participants the opportunity to translate and establish
specific agency guidelines for infusing the SAMSHA standards into their agency's culture.
